Launch of brochure about best way to have car repairs done
18/7/97
Having car repairs carried out as cheaply and efficiently as possible is the main topic of a free Ministry of Fair Trading brochure launched today.
Fair Trading Minister Doug Shave said research by the Ministry showed that people in country areas were more likely to face additional costs than their city counterparts
Speaking from Kununurra, where he launched the brochure, Mr Shave said isolation was the main reason for increased prices when getting motor vehicle repair work done.
"In the Kimberley region during the last 12 months, motor vehicle issues accounted for nearly 39 per cent of formal complaints received by the Ministry," he said.
"The Ministry's other regional offices generally have found inquiries about motor vehicle matters formed a large part of their workload.
"Country motorists can save themselves time and money if they follow some simple steps which are set out in the 'Motor Vehicle Repairs' brochure.
"In particular, consumers should remember to get written quotes for mechanical work and make sure they know exactly what they are getting for their money.
"Of course, from the repairer's point of view, sometimes additional work needs to be done, so the garage or car yard may only be willing to give a cost estimate.
"In such situations, it is a good idea for the parties to discuss the repairs before work continues, and also to get the details in writing.
"If you simply hand over the keys to your car and say 'fix it', you may leave yourself open to being charged beyond your ability to pay."
The brochure gives advice on arranging quotes, getting them amended, warranty work and 'implied' warranties under the Fair Trading Act. It also stresses the rights of repairers.
"For instance, car yards and garages are not obliged to supply a courtesy car while repairs are being conducted, but many do so out of goodwill towards their customers," Mr Shave said.
If both consumers and businesses know their rights and responsibilities, far fewer problems will arise.
Copies of the brochure are available from the Ministry's offices in Karratha, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton, Bunbury, Albany and at 251 Hay Street, East Perth.
