Launch of information booklet about glue-sniffing
31/8/93
Although the incidence of glue sniffing amongst young people in Western Australia is low, many parents are concerned about the trend and want more information about the practice.
Today, Health Minister Peter Foss launched a booklet for parents designed to provide practical information and to allay some anxieties that parents may feel if they discover their child is sniffing glues or solvents.
Mr Foss said in recent years the media and the general public had paid increasing attention to the incidence of glue sniffing in the community.
"There is no doubt that it can be quite shocking and disturbing for a parent to discover that their child might be sniffing glue or solvents," Mr Foss said.
"Parents should take heart that on current estimates only a small percentage of young people sniff solvents - it is estimated that 80 - 90 per cent of young people have never used glues or solvents, the majority who do only sniff it once or twice and then give it up themselves.
"However, whether young people use it in an experimental or in a regular way, they do require information and help to reduce the risk of harm.
"Unfortunately, a small minority of glue sniffers go on to regular use and may develop problems associated with their use.
"Numerous programs and community projects have been established to respond to glue and solvent use problems, and very importantly, a number of parent self-help groups have formed which provide information, support and counselling for concerned parents.
"Most young people do not need intensive help, but they do need support from their family, and parents have a primary role in helping their children come to terms with solvent sniffing.
"This booklet provides information and simple strategies that may be helpful in responding."
