Tourists visiting Western Australia's Mid-West region will now be guided by a new tourist map detailing the area's popular landmarks and attractions.

Deputy Premier Hendy Cowan launched the StreetSmart Mid-West Touring Map this morning.

The map is a joint project between the Department of Land Administration and the Mid-West Development Commission.

Mr Cowan said it would add an extra dimension for people travelling in one of the State's premier tourist destinations, with travellers' notes on tourist attractions, local history and safety tips about travelling in the outback.

The map covers the area from Leeman in the South to Carnarvon in the North and as far inland as Leonora. Town maps are included for Cue, Meekatharra, Mount Magnet, Mullewa and Wiluna.

"Many people associate the Mid-West with its spectacular wildflowers; however, this map will show there many more great attractions in the region," Mr Cowan said.

"The Mid-West features rugged coastal beauty, unique islands and spectacular outback scenery.

"In a relatively short time, tourists can travel from the heart of the wildflower country at Mullewa to the centre of the Murchison Shire, the only local government authority in Australia without a 'town' at all."

The map also pinpoints places where it is possible to enjoy a 'station stay', one of the growing tourism attractions in the region.

The Gascoyne Development Commission, Primary Industry Minister Monty House, Mid-West Tourist Promotions, the Gascoyne Tourist Association, CALM, Main Roads WA and local government authorities have also contributed to production of the map.

The map costs $6.95 and will be available from the Central Mapping Agency at Midland, local tourist bureaux in the Mid-West and newsagents.
