Launch of new volunteer sea rescue vessel
1/8/93
Emergency Services Minister Bob Wiese today praised the work of volunteer sea rescue groups as he helped launch a new rescue vessel based in Fremantle.
Mr Wiese helped cut the ribbon at the launch of the Fremantle Volunteer Sea Rescue Group's new vessel, the 'RV 100'.
The $250,000 vessel is designed to help the Fremantle volunteers cope with a growing demand for their services.
The Lotteries Commission provided $30,000 towards the cost of the vessel and the State Government last year provided the Fremantle Volunteer Sea Rescue Group with nearly $14,000.
Mr Wiese said volunteer groups such as the one in Fremantle performed an invaluable service.
"Fremantle is the busiest volunteer sea rescue group in Western Australia and the State Government is pleased to support them," Mr Wiese said.
"Last year the group carried out more than 300 rescues - an increase of more than 10 per cent on the previous year.
"I would like to pay tribute to the dedication and hard work of this important band of volunteers."
