Legislation to further protect Brixton Street wetlands in Kenwick
5/11/97
The Brixton Street wetlands in Kenwick will be further protected under a proposed planning amendment, Planning Minister Graham Kierath said.
The proposal will reserve land in the Yule Brook Nature Reserve, currently identified as a Planning Control Area, as Parks and Recreation under the Metropolitan Region Scheme.
The proposal was included in the South-East Districts Omnibus (No. 3) amendment to the Metropolitan Region Scheme, which is open for comment for three months.
"The Brixton Street wetlands include four declared rare flora and more than 20 priority species," Mr Kierath said.
"CALM strongly supports conservation of this area and has provided a commitment to manage the reserve."
Mt Henry Hospital site in Como is proposed for rezoning from Public Purposes to Urban in the amendment.
"The Health Department of WA is closing the hospital and it is proposed to demolish the hospital buildings and redevelop the area for residential purposes and a private nursing home," Mr Kierath said.
"The dental therapy school, the Murlali Lodge aged people's hostel, the Gracewood Nursing Home and a local open space reserve are to remain undisturbed.
"Rezoning and redevelopment of the site would involve retaining 1.12ha of bushland west of the dental clinic."
Another of the 26 proposals in the amendment involves rezoning land for the Ascot Waters development in line with the agreement between the WA Planning Commission, City of Belmont and the developers.
Many of the proposals are to rationalise zones for various highways.
The proposed amendment relates to land in the Cities of Armadale, Belmont, Canning, Gosnells and South Perth, the Town of Victoria Park and the Shire of Kalamunda and Serpentine-Jarrahdale.
Submissions are invited and should reach the Western Australian Planning Commission by February 13, 1998.
