Leonora's Telecentre is set to be a valuable community asset
4/8/99
Leonora's Telecentre will prove a valuable community asset, according to Regional Development Minister Hendy Cowan.
Mr Cowan said that as well as providing access to a wide range of advanced information and communications technology, the Telecentre would strengthen the local community.
He said the new facility would give Leonora residents access to information and communications technologies including computers, the Internet, scanning, printing, laminating and fax and photocopying services.
"As well as learning to use these technologies for business, leisure and community purposes, people will have access to education, government and private services through the Internet, " Mr Cowan said.
"The proposal was supported by the shire, the school, local businesses, major mining companies and contractors, the Leonora Aboriginal Corporation and the local Tourism Committee as well as individual community members.
"Its management committee includes representatives from all these groups, reflecting the depth of community enthusiasm for the proposal."
"The Leonora Shire has also committed to providing support worth more than $60,000 over the next three years.
"In addition, the Telecentre is to be located at Barnes Federal Hall, which will also provide ample space for other compatible community services and facilities to co-locate."
Mr Cowan said $50,000 would be provided jointly by the Commonwealth Government, through the 'Networking the Nation' program, and the State Government for equipment and salary support. Ongoing support would be provided if the centre continued to meet its negotiated resource and performance agreement.
