Lifting of restrictions on road trains confirmed
28/5/93
Transport Minister Eric Charlton has confirmed the lifting today of commodity restrictions on road trains using Great Eastern Highway between Northam and Coolgardie.
The previous government planned the change to take place on April 2 but the date was deferred by the new Minister after discussions with concerned local government bodies.
"The main area of concern was the condition of Great Eastern Highway following the very wet winter and the expected increase in the number of road trains that would follow the lifting of commodity restrictions," Mr Charlton said.
"The delay has allowed Main Roads to complete urgent repairs and improvements to the highway."
The work, which cost $7 million, included the provision of two passing lanes between Northam and Merredin.
Work is continuing on three more passing lanes and the upgrading of 10 kilometres of the highway.
To meet demands on the Coolgardie-Northam section of Great Eastern Highway, the Government is hoping to attract $30 million in Federal funding for a five year improvement program.
A speed limit of 90 kilometres per hour will be imposed for all road trains. The penalty for speeding will be the suspension of road train permits, placing the onus on owner operators to discourage their drivers from speeding.
In addition, Main Roads has asked operators to ensure that road trains travel at least 500 metres apart, and the extent to which operators comply with the request will influence future decisions to bring in penalties for travelling at a closer distance.
"I believe that the speed restrictions will overcome concerns about the safety of road trains," Mr Charlton said.
"The reduction in the total number of trucks resulting from the use of these very efficient vehicles will produce all-round benefits for the community."
Main Roads will notify the holders of road train permits of the new conditions of the permit which will apply throughout the State.
