Lotteries Commn funding boost for upgrading facilities in City of Subiaco
24/4/99
Plans to upgrade and expand community facilities in the City of Subiaco received a major boost today when Premier Richard Court presented a Lotteries Commission cheque for $250,000 to the council.
Making the presentation to Mayor Tony Costa at the Subiaco Community Centre complex in Rupert Street, Mr Court acknowledged the effort being made by the City of Subiaco to improve its services to the community, especially the elderly and those with disabilities.
The City of Subiaco plans to spend more than $1.3 million on a major expansion and upgrading of its community facilities. The project involves three different facilities - the Subiaco Community Centre complex, the Frail Aged Centre and the Palms Community buildings.
Mr Court said the Lotteries Commission funding had been granted to progress work to upgrade the Subiaco Community Centre complex.
"The complex is an important facility in the delivery of much-needed services within the Subiaco community," he said.
"However, the increasing demand for the key activities of the centre means there is an urgent need to upgrade the existing facilities."
Mr Court said the upgraded facilities would ensure the centre was able to meet the growing demand for its meals on wheels service and would also provide suitable accommodation for client counselling and office support.
The proposed renovations include:
- modernisation of the kitchen;
- creation of an additional dining and activity area;
- a larger community meeting area;
- improved access for people with disabilities;
- upgraded airconditioning; and -
- improved office accommodation for social workers, staff and volunteers.
Mr Court said the Subiaco Community Centre complex was a worthy recipient of Lotteries Commission funding.
"The Lotteries Commission is actively seeking partnerships with local government to improve community facilities," he said.
"This project, along with others such as the new Lotteries House to be opened next month at Joondalup in conjunction with the City of Joondalup, are excellent examples of the partnerships that are being forged."
