Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes today announced that many metropolitan organisations would receive grants to run Youth Development Holiday Programs.

"These programs provide activities during the summer school holidays for young people in high school, years 8 to 12," Mrs Edwardes said.

"Youth development holiday programs help young people improve their confidence, self-respect, self-esteem and personal development through a range of indoor and outdoor activities.

"These activities include challenging adventures such as abseiling, rock climbing camping, orienteering and a variety of sports and team games.

"An exciting feature of this holiday program is a major skate board program for up to 400 young people."

Mrs Edwardes said there would be programs on the problems of substance abuse, about healthy lifestyles, personal development, self-discipline and self-esteem.

"Young people will be challenged with new experiences, have a break from their normal environment, meet people and learn skills, all of which will benefit them in many ways," she said.

The Minister said the funding recognised the commitment of Family and Children's Services to supporting young people and their families in our community.
