Minister visits Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek on Keep Australia Beautiful Day
23/5/98
Aboriginal Affairs Minister Dr Kim Hames will be doing his bit to help keep Australia a beautiful - and tidy - place to be this Sunday.
The Minister will head off to visit Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek for Keep Australia Beautiful Day.
He will be accompanied by members of the Keep Australia Beautiful council.
"Both towns have clean-up programs in place for the day," Dr Hames said.
"These involve Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities, school students and police as well as other agencies and groups.
"Football players from the region will be in Fitzroy Crossing for the weekend sporting fixtures and have offered to lend a hand."
Collecting rubbish not only rewards the collectors with a tidier community, there is a financial gain as well.
The going rate for a garbage bag of rubbish from the designated clean-up sites is usually $2 but will be raised to $4 to allow students to help their schools buy extra equipment.
Dr Hames will attend a community breakfast in Fitzroy after the clean-up and a lunch in Halls Creek.
