Minister visits WA Arthritis Foundation during Arthritis Week
17/4/96
Health Minister Kevin Prince today learned about the benefits of exercise and hydrotherapy for an estimated two million Australians suffering from arthritis.
Mr Prince visited the Western Australian Arthritis Foundation during Arthritis Week.
He said the foundation had been assisting sufferers and their families and educating the wider community on arthritis issues since its establishment in 1972.
It worked in conjunction with the State Health Department, major hospitals, universities, a range of medical specialists and with the help of countless volunteers to serve Western Australians.
"The WA Arthritis Foundation plays an invaluable role in our community," Mr Prince said.
"Most people are still astonished to learn that arthritis affects an estimated two million Australians of all ages - some as young as 12 months.
"Through its 17 regional branches, six disease-specific support groups, 14 rheumatology clinics and more, the foundation plays a leading role in care, support and research into this widespread condition."
During his visit to the foundation, Mr Prince met people taking part in exercise classes for the general public run by a qualified physiotherapist, classes specifically for young women and mothers with arthritis aged 18-45 and hydrotherapy classes.
"The range of services provided by the foundation is staggering," he said.
"Ongoing research into the prevention of arthritis and an eventual cure is also something we should all support.
"The work of the foundation is a credit to the hundreds of people who give their time and energy to the cause and something which the whole community should support."
