Housing Minister Dr Kim Hames today officially opened eight independent living units in Stalker Road, Gosnells as part of the Amaroo Retirement Village.
The units were built in a joint venture between the Ministry of Housing and the Amaroo Retirement Village, with the Ministry contributing $541,000 and Amaroo providing land and further amenities for $255,000.
Dr Hames said joint ventures between the State Government and community organisations maximised the amount of residential accommodation that could be provided, particularly for seniors.
"The Ministry's joint venture housing program is a way in which it can assist by pooling resources with community groups such as Amaroo to provide rental accommodation for people on low incomes," Dr Hames said.
"The key to their success is flexibility and while the majority of this type of joint ventures tends to be for seniors, the Ministry also accommodates families, Aboriginal people and people with disabilities in the same way.
"Since 1980 these joint ventures have provided 1,400 units, much more than if either party had to go it alone."
Amaroo Retirement Village began operating in 1969 and has 300 independent living units, a hostel, a nursing home and recreation facilities.
