More land for Shenton Park industrial estate
8/4/93
The State Government had agreed to double the size of parkland to be retained in a proposed new LandCorp light industrial estate in Shenton Park.
Planning Minister Richard Lewis said the amount of open space in the estate would be increased to 10 per cent rather than the five per cent proposed in the original plan.
Mr Lewis said the increase was decided at a meeting he had this week with Premier Richard Court and Environment Minister Kevin Minson.
He said the move also followed representations from several groups, including the National Trust, urging the retention of as much bushland as possible.
"Areas of greatest natural heritage value will now be further enhanced under the increase," Mr Lewis said.
"In particular, three areas, where there are good mature stands of jarrah trees, will be retained for their ability to help protect the region's bird life.
"The locality is also well served by nearby substantial areas of parks and bushland, including Kings Park, Bold Park, Perry Lakes and several other smaller areas such as Shenton Park Lake."
Landcorp received final planning approval earlier this year to develop a high-quality light industrial park on the 20.9 hectare site on the outskirts of Shenton Park.
The Environmental Protection Authority concluded that under careful management the land could be used for light industry.
Mr Lewis said the subdivision would be professionally planned by Landcorp, with an emphasis placed on attractive landscaping.
He said the first release of blocks would be ready during 1993-94 and it was proposed to have sale conditions promoting high-quality landscaping throughout the estate.
"The new Shenton Park estate will overcome the shortage of land suitable for light industry in the western suburbs and, at the same time, boost employment opportunities in the area," Mr Lewis said.
The land is bound by the Lemnos Hospital reserve, Irwin Barracks and the Lemnos Street Dog Home, and is near the WA Water Authority Sewerage Treatment Plant.
The new estate is expected to attract businesses associated with the hospital, as well as those catering for the needs of the local community.
