Attorney General Peter Foss today announced the appointment of Ms Julienne Penny as a judge of the Family Court of Western Australia.
Ms Penny will replace Hon Justice Anderson who is retiring on May 31.
"The appointment of Ms Penny follows wide consultation amongst the judiciary and law associations and she is an excellent replacement for Justice Anderson," Mr Foss said.
Ms Penny was educated in South Australia and became a high school teacher serving in South Australia and WA.
She then entered the University of WA to study law and was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor in 1980. After being articled to Solomon Cullen & Co in Fremantle, followed by employment as a solicitor with two law practices in Fremantle, Ms Penny became a partner in the firm of Parkinson Penny & Co in 1984.
In 1988 she formed her own practice of Julienne Penny & Associates and in 1991 joined Wickham Chambers, practising solely as a barrister, where she is at present.
"Ms Penny has practised widely in the areas of family, welfare and criminal law, appearing regularly before the Family Court, and the Supreme and District Courts," Mr Foss said.
"She has also actively participated in a number of committees including the Chief Justice's Task Force on Gender Bias and the Legal Practice Board Disciplinary Tribunal.
"I am very pleased with her appointment and wish her well."
