More than $3 million from the Commonwealth Natural Heritage Trust has been allocated for new and ongoing Rivercare projects throughout Western Australia in this financial year.
Western Australian Water Resources Minister Dr Kim Hames today welcomed the funding, particularly allocations directed to new projects throughout the State.
"More than $1 million will go to new projects to be completed by community and land care groups as well as local government," Dr Hames said.
"These projects all provide the essential on-ground action that helps to restore and protect our waterways."
New projects receiving NHT funds in the South Coast region include:
    • $191,220 to the Frankland Gordon Catchment Management Group and others to undertake a rehabilitation project in the Upper Frankland Gordon River catchment; and -
    • $20,900 to the Gnowangerup Landcare District Committee to improve water control to protect the wetlands of the Mills Lake focus catchment.

"These funds are particularly important as they support work done by communities to improve their local environments," Dr Hames said.
"On-going funding has been allocated to the Water and Rivers Commission to implement a floodplain management program across the State.
"The commission has also received on-going funding to develop and implement local river action plans in the South Coast region."
NHT funds will also go to the Hay River Landcare District Committee and Coobidge Creek Landcare Group to continue their projects to improve their local waterways.
"I'm pleased to see a wide range of initiatives receiving this boost - volunteers and community group members are making a very real contribution to improving WA's water resources and this money will help keep that work going," Dr Hames said.
