Transport Minister Eric Charlton today announced the introduction of a new bus service for the City of Armadale.

The service, beginning on July 3, 1995, would link Wungong to the Armadale Interchange.

Route 242 would run approximately every 30 minutes during peak periods and hourly during off-peak periods.

"This is an interim move to service Wungong while further adjustments are made to the Transperth system to keep pace with developments expected over the next few years," Mr Charlton said.

"The route was endorsed by a majority of the Wungong community at a public meeting held in January."

Route 242 would commence at the Armadale Interchange via Commerce Avenue, right Fourth Road, right Church Avenue, left Seventh Road, right Wungong Road, right Harber Drive, right Townley Street, left Duri Street, right Tijuana Road, Powell Crescent, left Chadwick Parade, right Farmer Avenue, left Ninth Road, left Harber Drive, left Wungong Road, left Seventh Road, right Church Avenue, left Fourth Road, left Commerce Avenue to the Armadale Interchange.

Mr Charlton said the new service initially would not follow the intended route along Avonlee Road until traffic problems at the intersection of Church and Seventh Avenues were resolved.

Route 231, which presently serviced the area, would be altered.

"The primary role of route 231 is to link Forrestdale and Armadale.  By deleting the loop through Wungong, the journey will be reduced.  Some additional trips on route 231 have also been incorporated, improving services to Transperth customers," Mr Charlton said.

Route 231 would no longer travel along Wungong Road, Harber Drive, Townley Street, Avonlee Road or the section of Seventh Road east of Church Avenue.
