Centrecare will operate a new service in Joondalup to help families handle parent and adolescent conflict, Family and Children's Services Minister Rhonda Parker announced today.

Mrs Parker said Family and Children's Services would provide $50,000 a year for the organisation to run the service to help families with children aged between 10 and 18 years.

"The new service will help improve relationships and family life by developing better communication and conflict resolution skills," the Minister said.

"The teenage years can be a turbulent and challenging time for families as children move from childhood to adulthood.

"Parents and adolescents may change the way they relate to each other and this can cause confusion and conflict which affects the entire family.

"Trained counsellors at the new services will assist families to understand what sparks conflict and develop ways so that conflict can be eased or avoided."

Mrs Parker said the service demonstrated the State Government's commitment to supporting families through resources and skills development.

The funding would continue until at least the end of December, 1999.
