New appointments announced for the Water and Rivers Commission
3/3/99
The Water and Rivers Commission has recruited new but familiar faces to its board.
Former Department of Resources Development chief executive Des Kelly and City of Stirling Deputy Mayor Rod Willox have both joined the board as new members.
Announcing the appointments today, Water Resources Minister Dr Kim Hames said commission deputy chairman Ken Webster would take over from mining executive Ian Burston as chairman.
Dr Hames paid tribute to Mr Burston's work in helping to establish the commission in 1996 and in guiding it through the early days of a newly-structured West Australian water industry.
"Ian brought tremendous knowledge and credibility to the commission as lead manager of the State's water resources," Dr Hames said.
"Ken is a former Water Authority chairman and is eminently qualified to serve as chairman of the board.
"We are also very pleased to have Des Kelly joining the board because his knowledge and experience will be invaluable in maintaining the commission's role in guiding State development through responsible water resources management."
Dr Hames said Cr Willox, a former medical scientist and army officer, had strong links in local government which was a crucial stakeholder in WA water management.
Jos Chatfield has been appointed deputy chair.
Other board members include Graham Slessar, Noel Robins and Water and Rivers Commission chief executive Roger Payne.
