Ballajura residents received a boost today with the announcement of a new community centre to be built in the area.

Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes said the $1.58 million centre would be established in South Ballajura and would provide an important venue for many groups in the community.

Mrs Edwardes said the project was a joint venture between the Shire of Swan and Family and Children's Services which would greatly benefit local families, individuals and seniors.

"The centre will be a large, multi-purpose building, which is flexible enough to cater for the changing needs of residents in the area," she said.

"It will feature a big, multi-purpose hall which can be used for a range of activities such as indoor bowls, concerts or exhibitions.

"It will also boast activity rooms playgroups and other pre-school activities, as well as general purpose rooms for meetings or counselling sessions."

Mrs Edwardes said the easily-accessible facility would be built to meet the needs of senior citizens so as to be easily accessible and would be an attractive venue for aged people's programs.

Family and Children's Services would also use the building to provide a range of services to support local families and children.

"This joint venture demonstrates the benefits to the community of a partnership between the shire and State Government which provides a large and flexible resource for local residents," the Minister said.

The Shire of Swan is contributing $780,000, Family and Children's Services $500,000 and the Lotteries Commission $300,000 towards the project. Hawk Developments has been awarded the tender for the centre which will be completed by mid-1997.
