Speedway racing has taken a new direction in Western Australia with the launch today of Speedway West - the new central governing body.
Launched by Planning Minister Graham Kierath, Speedway West brings together the interests of promoters, competitors, insurers, clubs, Government and the public to develop the sport in this State.
Mr Kierath said it was the first time since 1927 that the sport had had a central body in Western Australia to co-ordinate issues such as safety, regional interests and growth strategies.
"That is not to say the sport has suffered. To the contrary, in recent times it has flourished," he said.
"Imagine what can be achieved now they have a central body such as Speedway West."
Speedway West will comprise a commission and three advisory groups to address various aspect of the sport in metropolitan and regional WA.
Mr Kierath said the launch of Speedway West today came just hours before the last race meeting at the Claremont track before moving to the Kwinana Motorplex.
He said it was an end of an era for the sport in WA but also the start of a new direction in motor sport.
"The speedway fraternity understands the delays that have been necessary to ensure the Kwinana Motorplex met all criteria," the Minister said.
"At this stage it seems they will lose the first month of the next season but I believe most accept this in the context of access to a long-term facility."
Mr Kierath said survey work was already under way at the Kwinana site and construction would commence as soon as possible.
"We have put tight restrictions on the operations of the Motorplex to protect the interests of patrons and residents and these standards will have to be met," he said.
"I hope now that the people of Kwinana can embrace the Motorplex and take up the opportunities such a facility can provide."
