Homeswest is assisting to provide a renewable energy-based power system which will improve living conditions at the Swan Valley Nyungah Aboriginal community.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Dr Kim Hames said today the new power system was part of the community's aim to become more self-reliant.

"The renewable energy power system makes use of wind turbines and solar panels and is expected to meet 75 per cent of the community's power requirements," he said.

"The Government is encouraging more self-management in Aboriginal communities in the areas of environmental health and building maintenance and this new system will help encourage that spirit of independence.

"I am pleased an Aboriginal community was chosen as the venue for some of the most up-to-date Western Australian energy technology which will provide electricity in a more natural and environmentally friendly form."

Dr Hames said the new system would act as a demonstration site to help remote Aboriginal communities set up similar systems where power supplies were a problem.

"There will also be a reduction in power to the community which will benefit residents," he said.

The Minister said Homeswest had contributed $50,000 towards the project.
