A new $400,000 Mental Health Facility was officially opened by Health Minister John Day in Port Hedland today.
Mr Day said the facility was an important component of the recently released NorHealth 2020 Moving Forward Paper, which outlined a vision for future health improvement in the region.
"The new building is a high standard transportable building composed of three modules, to allow easy relocation on the hospital site or elsewhere," Mr Day said.
"Two new interview rooms, new reception, waiting area, large group room, staff offices and amenities have been provided along with a private outdoor area.
"New landscaping and fencing has been incorporated to enhance the building and give a more welcoming feeling.
"NorHealth 2020 recognises the special health needs in the North West and offers a unique framework for health service delivery in the Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley over the next 20 years.
"Since the NorHealth 2020 planning process commenced in 1997, in excess of $30 million has been invested in strategic health initiatives in the North-West.
"Over the next five years, an additional $11.5 million will be dedicated to more special initiatives in the North-West which address the recommendations outlined in the plan."
Mr Day said NorHealth 2020 was an example of this Government's policy to provide care closer to home, wherever it was safe to do so.
