New school for East Canning Vale
3/8/00
A new school will open in the eastern end of Canning Vale in 2002, adding to the educational choices for students in the rapidly growing suburb.
Education Minister Colin Barnett announced today work on a new school, tentatively called East Canning Vale Primary School, would start next year and be completed in time for the 2002 school year.
Mr Barnett said the school, to cost $4.2 million, would relieve pressure on the large Canning Vale Primary School.
"Canning Vale has developed very quickly and is now a well populated suburb," he said.
"This new school will give families in the eastern section of the suburb a school of their own and a focal point for the community."
Mr Barnett said, along with 12 classrooms, the school would have three pre-primary classrooms - two for five-year-olds and one for four-year-olds.
"It will also have a covered assembly area, library/resource centre, art/craft and music rooms, a canteen and an administration block," he said.
"The school will also be fitted with fibre-optic cabling for computer linkups to the Internet, other schools and the Education Department's central office."
Mr Barnett said that, with recreation such an important part of school life for all children, East Canning Vale would be built with hard courts and an oval for sport and practice cricket wickets.
It would also have a dental therapy centre.
The Minister said he had approved construction of the new school after a Local Area Education Planning process participated in by the local community.
"Local families have played a very important part in the planning process for this school," he said.
"I would like to thank them for their participation."
