Emergency Services Minister Kevin Prince today opened Western Australia's most state-of-the-art fire station.
The new Success Fire Station in the City of Cockburn is a unique collaboration between local government, the Fire and Emergency Service Authority and local firefighters.
"The Success Fire Station has been designed to meet the City of Cockburn's growing needs for the next 20-30 years," Mr Prince said.
"Cockburn is a rapidly expanding area in one of the fastest growing corridors in the Perth Metropolitan area.
"Not only has this station been designed for the future; its inception has been especially unique as this is the first time firefighters have been fully involved in the concept design."
Mr Prince made special mention of Senior Firefighter Neville Baker, who took a leading role in the planning and construction of the building.
"Neville attended many meetings in his own time to ensure that the project met all the expectations of the station crews," he said.
Mr Prince said the entire team at Success Fire Station should be commended for their efforts.
"They are showing true leadership in firefighting by playing an integral part not only in fire safety but planning for fire safety in the future," he said.
"The team at Success Fire Station have shown a sense of vision for a safer community in Cockburn."
The Success Fire Station crews have also undertaken to donate their own personal time and energy in designing and planting the station's gardens.
"The major theme of the garden design is to display what a fire safe garden should look like and for the public to come and view and ask questions on open days," Mr Prince said.
"This station is truly state-of-the-art and is a clear demonstration of the future of firefighting in Western Australia. All those involved can be very proud of their efforts."
In February, only days after the Success crews had relocated from the Spearwood Fire Station, they were called on to fight the Oceanfast shipbuilding fire in Henderson.
The Success firefighters were the first to respond to the incident and their efforts, and those of the back-up stations, contained the fire to the ship of origin.
This allowed the company to return to operations the next day, as damage to the rest of the factory was dramatically reduced.
The firefighters involved in the Oceanfast fire will be recognised for their efforts at the station opening. A special commendation will be presented to the firefighters at 11am this morning.
