A new 60km walking trail along the famous Perth to Kalgoorlie water pipeline will be established between Mundaring Weir and Northam.
It is part of the $20 million Golden Pipeline Trail project, which will see the restoration of water pumping stations and historical railway sites along the 550km pipeline between Mundaring and Kalgoorlie.
Today Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes presented a Lotteries Commission cheque for $50,000 to the National Trust of Australia (WA) to create the walking trail.
Wooroloo Prison inmates will build fixtures, clear bush and grade the track. The first stage will be finished by next Easter.
"There will be signs about historical and Aboriginal heritage sites, the rail history, the pipeline history, flora, fauna and other interesting aspects," Mrs Edwardes said.
It is expected the trail will be widely used by walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. An upgraded surface will make it suitable for people in wheelchairs.
The trail will connect with existing and proposed walk trails in the Mundaring Weir precinct, including the Bibbulmun Track.
The Bibbulmun Track is Western Australia's only long-distance walking trail and is one of the longest, continuously marked trails in Australia. This 963km long-distance walktrail stretches from Kalamunda near Perth to Albany.
