One of Northam's most historic buildings has been permanently listed on the State Register of Heritage Places.

Heritage Minister Richard Lewis said the Northam Town Hall had a colourful history and was highly valued by the local community for its association with the development of the town.

Mr Lewis said the construction of the hall caused a major rift between the residents of Northam.

"There was a delay in the commencement of construction after a debate broke out between residents about the location of the hall," he said.

"Residents on the eastern side of the town wanted the hall built on the corner of Hawes Street (now Ensign Dale Place) and Fitzgerald Street.

"Alternatively, west end residents preferred a site on the west side of Fitzgerald Street.

"The eventual Wellington Street location was considered a compromise and the hall was built in 1898, however, there was further debate about the size of the loan required to build it."

The town hall is representative of a late nineteenth century public building, designed in the Federation Free Classical style.

The Minister said that once the town hall had been built it became a source of great pride for Northam residents.

"The town hall is a landmark in Northam and demonstrates the town's prosperity in the 1890s," he said.

"The State Government has recognised the historical importance of the building and the permanent listing will ensure that the site has the protection of WA's heritage laws."
