Northbridge post office to be included in heritage register
3/11/93
One of the last buildings designed by colonial architect George Temple-Poole has been placed on the State register of heritage places.
Heritage Minister Richard Lewis said today that he had directed the Heritage Council of Western Australia to include the Brisbane Street Post Office in Northbridge on the interim register of heritage places.
Built in 1896 to help meet Perth's rapidly growing communications needs during the gold-rush era, the Brisbane Street Post Office was used for its original purpose for 97 years.
"The Brisbane Street Post Office is the most complete example of a late 1890s suburban post office in Perth, with a high degree of authenticity and integrity," Mr Lewis said.
He had also directed the Heritage Council to include the Collie Post Office on the interim register of heritage places.
The building, designed by government architect Hillson Beasley, had been a landmark to generations of residents of the coal-mining town since it was built in 1905.
The building still serves as Collie's Post Office.
The two buildings are owned by Australia Post and are due to be sold.
"Placing these buildings on the heritage register will ensure their heritage is protected," Mr Lewis said.
He said 44 buildings and other places of heritage significance had been placed on either the permanent or interim register of heritage places since February.
Submissions on the entry of these buildings on the register can be lodged with the Director of the Heritage Council of Western Australia, 292 Hay Street, East Perth until December 10.
