Official launch of first phase of Port Kennedy resort project
December 12, 1995
Planning Minister Richard Lewis today officially launched the first phase of the $250 million Port Kennedy Resort Project, south of Perth.
The project will see the construction of a world-class tourist and recreational resort at Warnbro Sound.
Mr Lewis said the first phase of the eight-phase project had included the construction of a sealed access road and beachfront car park, giving public access to the coast.
"This is an important first step in a project which will have major employment, economic and social benefits for the local community," he said.
The developers, Port Kennedy Resorts Pty Ltd, will create a fully-integrated tourism and recreational facility on the 740-hectare site, which features seven kilometres of ocean frontage providing clean, safe, unpolluted swimming with white sandy beaches.
"The developer's aim is to create a vibrant and attractive town centre and resort community, which is in harmony with the natural landscape," Mr Lewis said.
"It will be a resort of distinctive character and appeal that will provide a range of recreational, entertainment, retail and commercial amenities for the local community and visitors."
The Minister said more than half of the total project area was devoted to the Port Kennedy Scientific Park, which was an important part of the project and fulfilled a Coalition election commitment.
"The State Government is funding the construction of the majority of the $400,000 feral-proof fence currently being built around the perimeter of the park," he said.
"When complete, the park will be similar in size to Kings Park in Perth and will be an invaluable resource for members of the local community and scientists who will have access to the area for research."
In April the Minister granted approval for the first three phases of the Port Kennedy project, after it received environmental clearance from both State and Federal Government levels.
Included in the approved development is an 18-hole private golf course and clubhouse, an 18-hole public golf course and clubhouse, villa and apartment accommodation and self-contained beach rental holiday units.
Plans for the construction of a marina are yet to receive environmental approval.
