Official launch of new community TV service (Ch 31)
12/2/99
Western Australia's first community television service, Channel 31, will deliver a uniquely local perspective to Perth viewers, Commerce and Trade Minister Hendy Cowan told an official launch ceremony today.
Mr Cowan said that when the service commenced in April, it would have the potential to provide a balanced and comprehensive perspective on issues of interest to Western Australians.
He said it would feature a wide range of educational, cultural and sporting programs as well as WA-focussed current affairs.
"Channel 31 will also provide a valuable forum for communication between metropolitan and regional WA through the WESTLINK network," Mr Cowan said.
"It will also create important new opportunities for local film makers, sporting organisations and minority interests."
Mr Cowan congratulated the WA Community Broadcasting Association, which has been awarded the licence, and fellow consortium members - the State's three public universities; government agencies including Contract and Management Services, the Department of Training and the Film and Television Institute; the WA Trotting Association, the WA Aboriginal Media Association and Community Television Perth.
The Minister said the Department of Commerce and Trade, an affiliate member, would continue to play a facilitating role for the station.
