An 8km realignment of North West Coastal Highway between Green Street and the Drummond Cove Road and incorporating the new Chapman River Bridge at Geraldton was officially opened today by Transport Minister Eric Charlton.

Mr Charlton said the construction works, which began in February 1996, created a new northern entrance into the city.

The new bridge was built by Barclay Mowlem Construction Pty Ltd and, with the associated roadworks undertaken by Main Roads being completed in February 1997, was the first stage of a major upgrading of North West Coastal Highway through Geraldton.

Mr Charlton praised the co-operation between Main Roads and the City of Geraldton.

"The City of Geraldton took on construction of the tie-in between the old Chapman River Bridge and Chapman Road to the south, recreating the link that existed 25 years ago, before North West Coastal Highway was built," he said.

"The new alignment of the highway greatly improves traffic flow and safety by guiding heavy vehicles away from the original Chapman River Bridge which can no longer cope with today's regional transport needs."

Mr Charlton said the overall project, which was under the management of Main Roads Mid-West Region, cost $8 million and was funded from State road funds.
