A new $4.08 million primary school, serving the fast-growing Canning Vale area, has been opened officially today.

Education Minister Norman Moore said the school already had 251 primary and 61 pre-primary pupils and enrolments were expected to increase by 80 to 100 each year for the next two years.

Mr Moore said the school, built to the high standards of the 1990s, opened at the beginning of the year with facilities such as a covered assembly area, a music room, library, an art-room with a kiln, a pre-primary centre, a conference area and three teaching blocks.

The school would also incorporate joint community facilities and become part of the Education Department's network of schools with special facilities for students with disabilities.

At present two classrooms were being used for education support services for students with disabilities and it was intended that at some time in the future, a third classroom would be reserved for this purpose.  Together the three classrooms would become an Educational Support Centre with its own principal.

Mr Moore said the City of Canning would contribute $288,000 towards the cost of the school for joint community facilities.  It would share the use of an oval and two fenced multi-purpose hard courts at the school.

The Department of Community Development was currently negotiating with the Canning Council for a joint development on the school site which would include a child health centre, a facility for four-year-olds and a hall.

It was hoped that these facilities would be completed by the start of second term next year.
