Premier Richard Court has commended the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder for its ongoing commitment to the development of world-class sport and recreation facilities in the Goldfields.
Officially opening the $16.8 million Oasis Recreation Complex in Kalgoorlie-Boulder today, Mr Court said Kalgoorlie-Boulder had always lead the way in the provision of water sport and recreation facilities.
In 1938, the first Olympic swimming pool to be built in Western Australia opened in Kalgoorlie. At the time it was only the second pool of its type in Australia.

Mr Court said the opening of the Oasis Recreation Complex was another important milestone in the provision of sports facilities in the region.
"The State Government recognises the importance of facilities such as these, especially in remote areas of Western Australia and has been pleased to provide part of the funding required for the project," he said.
The State Government committed $3.56 million to the cost of the complex and over the previous five years has spent another $5.5 million on sport and recreation initiatives in the Goldfields.
The Oasis centre includes:

      • a 50m, 10-lane heated indoor Olympic pool;
      • a three-court stadium and a range of function and meeting rooms;
      • a leisure water section featuring a river ride, water cannon, water slides and other features;
      • a separate toddler pool, two spas and a sauna;
      • two associated outdoor grassed areas capable of holding 15 soccer or hockey sized pitches; and -
      • outdoor hard surface areas for netball.

Mr Court said the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the local community and the State Government had worked together to bring the project to fruition.
"Community needs have been given priority in the planning of this project and the end result is a great example to other authorities wanting to establish similar facilities," he said.
"The significant investment in the complex by the Government and the local community and will help local athletes realise their true potential and achieve their sporting dreams.
"At the same time people will have access to a range of top-class recreation facilities.
"The waiting is over for the people of the Goldfields and the Oasis will serve them well for many years to come."
