Water Resources Minister Roger Nicholls officially opened the Petrudor Pipeline Extension of the Goldfields and Agricultural Water Scheme at Kalannie today.

The pipeline supplies water to 32 farms in the West Burakin and Kalannie districts where the provision of on-farm water supply has often proved difficult and expensive.

At the opening ceremony conducted at the Kalannie Sporting and Recreation Club, Mr Nicholls complimented the local pipeline committee, the Shires of Dalwallinu and Wongan-Ballidu and the Water Corporation for the teamwork that had gone into creating the $1 million scheme.

The chairman of the Farm Water Co-ordinating Committee, Mr Bill McNee, MLA for Moore attended the opening and the Shires of Dalwallinu and Wongan-Ballidu, the Board of the Water Corporation, and the Rural Water Council were also represented.

Senior Government officials included Mr Brian Martin, head of the Office of Water Regulation, Mr Menno Henneveld, general manager of Customer Services for the Water Corporation, and the corporation's regional manager, Mr Terry Hambleton.

The Petrudor extension was a joint project involving the State Government, the Water Corporation, the local community and the Shires of Dalwallinu and Wongan-Ballidu.

The total cost was just under $1 million, with the community contributing one third of the cost.

The community contribution was partly in cash and largely in kind, such as labour for all pipe work and tank installations, the provision of earth moving equipment, and provision of sand for pipe bedding.

The project involved 94 km of pipes, five tanks and two pumping stations.

The chairman of the Petrudor Pipeline Committee was Barry Gething of Kalannie and the secretary was Peter Brennan of Ballidu.

The extension was part of the Farm Water Plan which is administered by the Office of Water Regulation. It was designed and constructed by the Water Corporation and draws water from the Goldfields and Agricultural Water Scheme.
