The sport of tennis has a new playing headquarters in Western Australia - the new State Tennis Centre at Burswood.

Premier Richard Court this evening officially opened the first phase of the multi-million-dollar new centre - which comprises 13 tennis courts, a grandstand and administrative building, lighting and car parking.

It is envisaged a further 18 courts will be built at the complex.

"The completion of this first phase of the tennis centre provides the State with a badly needed tennis venue of international standard," Mr Court said.

"The development of a 'dedicated' facility will certainly help to attract national and international competitions to Perth and provide a world-class facility for use by local tennis players."

The first stage of the centre has been constructed at a cost of $4.8 million - with $3.6 million being provided by the State Government.

"Facilities such as this will help in Tennis West's drive to attract more people to participate in the sport and also develop more world-ranked tennis players from Western Australia," Mr Court said.

"The opening of the centre supports the State Government's commitment to making recreational and competitive sport available to Western Australians of all ages."
