Young people in Nannup are celebrating the completion of a project they hope will make their town a much more exciting place to live - their own skate park.
Youth Minister Mike Board will open the new $57,500 park this afternoon. The park is located in the Marinko Tomas Park and accommodates a wide range of activities including roller blading, skateboarding, bike-riding and roller-skating.
The skate park, built with funding which included an Office of Youth Affairs (OYA) Skate Grant of $10,000, provides much needed recreation facilities for the young people of Nannup - a town which is isolated from most forms of youth entertainment.
"Nannup is a beautiful little town with many attractions for tourists but it is a long way from the beach or the cinema," Mr Board said. "It is vital that young people have facilities where they can pursue their recreational interest and, equally importantly, places where they can socialise.
"It is even more important that young people have played a key role in its design and in fund raising to pay for it. Crucially, the Nannup Skate Park has the endorsement of the local Youth Advisory Committee and has been approved by the Skating Association of Western Australia."
The Nannup area has about 250 children and young people, between the ages of five and 19 years, who are expected to use the facility. Funding for the project came from Nannup Shire Council ($19,166), a State Government Community Sport and Recreation Grant ($19,1666), community fund raising ($9,168) and the OYA grant ($10,000).
To date, there have been 25 OYA Skate Grants, totalling $230,120, approved for skate park projects across Western Australia.
