Attorney General Peter Foss today officially opened the newly restored Broome Court House after one of the most significant restoration and heritage programs undertaken for a court facility.

Built in 1889, the courthouse is one of the most important heritage-listed buildings in the Kimberley. It was originally a cable station, but has operated as a courthouse since 1921.

Mr Foss said great care had been taken with the restoration work.

"The paint colours were selected according to paint scrapings taken from original surfaces under the supervision of the Heritage Council of Western Australia," he said.

"Even the outer door used teak imported from South East Asia to link back to the original wall linings.

"The courthouse had been in very poor condition with working conditions for staff both noisy and difficult.

"The old air-conditioning system was so noisy it was like sitting next to a giant extractor fan and this has been replaced."

In addition to structural restoration, the $300,000 works included special features such as soundproofing of the jury room and construction of a glass airlock at the front entrance to reduce traffic noise.

The Broome Court House is an important tourist attraction and this aspect has also been enhanced by the provision of new signs and interpretive materials around the facility to provide information on the history of the courthouse.

Local builder, John Silver & Co, with NBC Aboriginal Corporation as Project Manager, carried out the restoration.

"Prisoners from Broome Regional Prison also assisted with thatching and repairs to Gazebo roofs," Mr Foss said.

"The State Government is committed to improving court facilities across the State.

"Over the last four years, more than $4 million has been spent on strategic maintenance programs for courts and prisons Statewide."
