Official opening of performing arts centre and gym at Como school
13/3/98
Years of hard work and dedication have seen a dream of Como Senior High School realised today, with the official opening of the school's $2 million performing arts centre and gymnasium.
Education Minister Colin Barnett said he was delighted to visit the school this afternoon and recognise the efforts of the many people who had worked hard to achieve the new facility.
Past and present students of Como Senior High School have excelled in various sports, including hockey at state, national and international levels. The school's Como Golf Academy has also opened this year and is attracting students from around the State.
"The performing arts centre and gymnasium is a long-held dream of the Como school community," Mr Barnett said.
"Planning for this facility began in 1996 and the building program was completed last year.
"Innovative design has resulted in high quality, purpose-built facilities including a student study area, renovated staff offices, a state-of-the-art performing arts and music facility, a new sports hall, canteen and a large undercover student area.
"I am sure the school community is delighted with the facility and I'm confident it will receive many years of good use."
Mr Barnett also congratulated the Education Department and the project's architects, Loftus, Hewitt and Walker, on their collaborative relationship with the school throughout the design, development and building phases.
"It is goodwill such as this that, with the strong school community spirit, will make the facility a success," he said.
