Police Minister and the Member for Darling Range John Day officially opened the $1million Swan General Dental Clinic at the Swan Health Service site today.

Mr Day, a former dentist, said the modern facility incorporated ergonomically designed surgeries which would enable the provision of a high level of dental care to the community of the Midland District well into the next century.

"The clinic was proposed in late 1994 when public dental services in Western Australia were changing direction and moving away from a centralised system to improve community accessibility," he said.

Mr Day said that more than 25,000 people from the Midland region were eligible for public dental treatment in the new facility.

"And that figure is set to dramatically increase over the next few years along with the rapid growth in major new housing projects around the Midland region," he said.

"This clinic will provide a much-needed dental service to the eastern suburbs and reduce the patient load on existing facilities in Victoria Park, Perth and Warwick."

About 300,000 people aged 18 years and over are eligible for publicly funded dental care in Western Australia.

This new facility will complement the Perth Dental Hospital, the six other metropolitan dental clinics and 11 country clinics operating throughout the State.
