Official opening of three new sand volleyball courts in West Perth
24/11/99
One of Perth's oldest sporting locations is the new home for Volleyball WA.
Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today officially opened three new sand volleyball courts and administration facilities on the site of the old Royal Park Bowling Club on the corner of Vincent and Charles streets, West Perth.
It also marked the official opening of the 1999-2000 summer beach volleyball season.
The development of the complex was helped by a $79,222 grant from the State Government's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.
It was supported by matching funding from the Town of Vincent and the Western Australian Volleyball Association.
The complex will promote beach volleyball to the community.
"This is the first purpose-built facility that Volleyball WA has developed and marks a turning point in the business management of the organisation," Mr Moore said.
He said beach volleyball had been growing in popularity since it was introduced as an Olympic sport in Atlanta in 1996, where WA-based Kerri Pottharst won a bronze medal.
"Volleyball is one of those sports, like walking, which requires very little equipment, is non-contact and can be played almost anywhere," Mr Moore said.
"We all know the benefits that regular physical activity brings.
"If every Australian was physically active for only 30 minutes each day, savings to the health budget alone would run into hundreds of millions of dollars."
Mr Moore complimented the Town of Vincent for its redevelopment of the site, which included the Volleyball WA facilities.
