Official opening of two airstrips in the Kimberley
25/9/97
Transport Minister Eric Charlton today officially opened two airstrips in the Kimberley which are expected to provide a major boost for tourism and regional development.
The State Government has provided $2 million to upgrade and seal the strips at Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing as part of the Regional Airport Development scheme.
The upgrade of the two airports means greater year-round access by fixed-wing aircraft, particularly during local and regional flood periods.
"The improvements to the two airstrips are part of the Government's commitment to supporting tourism and regional development," Mr Charlton said.
"Having the runways sealed will encourage general aviation into the area and allow tourism operators, the shires and the community to promote the region more aggressively.
"The Government has provided $1 million to each airport on the basis that the Shire of Derby, West Kimberley and the Shire of Hall's Creek agree to a set of conditions, including open access to general avaition," he said.
The Minister said the upgrading works gave both airports paved taxiway and aircraft parking areas. A feature of the Hall's Creek facility was permanent lighting.
