Tourism Minister Doug Shave opened the 1993 Coca Cola Rottnest Festival today on the shores of the island's Swan beach.

Mr Shave said the festival, to be held over the Labour Day long weekend, was an excellent initiative of the Rottnest Island business community, ably supported by the Rottnest Island Authority.

"Rottnest is one of Western Australia's most important tourist facilities," Mr Shave said.

"It also holds a special place in the hearts of many people who have fond memories of holidays spent at Geordie Bay, travelling the island by bicycle or sampling the bakery's justifiably famous wares."

The festival is now in its third year and Mr Shave said it was recognised that such community-based events made a healthy contribution to the promotion of tourist destinations.

"The publicity generated by this type of promotion attracts visitors both for the weekend and in future months," he said.

The festival offers a varied program, ranging from music both by community and professional groups and individuals, craft displays and street entertainment to sporting activities.
