Arts Minister Peter Foss opened the Aherns Installation Art Project 1999 at Aherns Perth City Store tonight.
This is Aherns' fifth year of sponsoring the installation event and the Minister has praised the company for its long-term support of the arts.
Western Australian artists Rodney Glick and Olga Cironis have installed artworks in the store. Local art students Abraham Dunovits, Stephen Keeling, Joanne Bowman and Anthony Kelly assisted the artists.
Mr Foss said the artists were given every opportunity to express their work within the context of a retail environment and shoppers were drawn into close contact with fresh and challenging work produced by WA artists.
"Curiosity brings people into the store to see the artworks and sometimes they are surprised or even shocked by the art, while many are delighted to experience art in a new environment," the Minister said.
"I think Aherns advertising says it all, bringing the best in contemporary art to an audience who love to shop.
"It is a pleasure for me to recognise and applaud Aherns foresight and continued enthusiasm for the arts, and in particular their latest commitment to this Installation Art Project and their strong support for the Warhol exhibition now showing at the Art Gallery of WA."
The Installation Art Project will be open until Wednesday, June 23.
Next year, it is proposed to have an international artist work with a group of younger WA artists to install a series of works.
