Housing Minister Dr Kim Hames today opened the Falkirk Park Estate in Maylands.

"Falkirk Park was formerly the site of Mephan Ferguson's Pipe Works, which holds a place in Western Australian history as Mephan Ferguson manufactured half the pipes for the Coolgardie Water Supply," Dr Hames said.

"The site was purchased by Homeswest in the early 1990s and the land was rezoned from industrial to residential."

The subdivision development was carried out in 1997 and a total of 67 lots will be available for sale.

"Remnants of the old buildings have been retained on site, including a portion of an old retaining wall on Monkton Fairway," Dr Hames said.

"Public art within the park also reflects the location's history."

Four streets in Falkirk Park have been named after deceased ex-servicemen including:

·         Plowman Circle, after Ken Plowman;

·         Lodge Terrace, in memory of Bob Lodge;

·         Monkton Fairway, which was named after Laurie Monkton; and -

·         Caston Terrace, in memory of Joe Caston.

Lois Caston, wife of the late Joe Caston, attended today's opening.

"The six display homes opened today are in Caston Terrace and, the day after Remembrance Day, it was seems very fitting to have Mrs Caston with us to celebrate the opening," Dr Hames said.

"The late Joe Caston served Australia between 1940 and 1945 and as Chief Petty Officer on the HMAS Stuart and then the Geraldton.

"To date, a total of 47 lots have been offered for sale in Falkirk Park, 26 of these have been sold at prices ranging between $88,500 and $105,000.

"Homeswest is involved in the construction of 16 seniors' units and two homes for people with disabilities within the subdivision."
