Opening of Water and Rivers Commission's offices in Albany
28/10/97
Sound management of water resources in an area such as the Great Southern was not possible without an integrated approach, Water Resources Minister Dr Kim Hames said today.
The Minister was opening the Water and Rivers Commission's new Albany offices.
"This office will form the linchpin allowing the Government and the community to work together to preserve one of the most beautiful and fragile regions in Western Australia," he said.
"The south coast is enormously diverse in terms of its water resources. It varies from the high rainfall areas of Walpole to the semi-arid areas to the east.
"It contains internationally recognised wetlands, over 22 major river systems and some 25 estuaries as well as some important groundwater."
The new office will also play a part in Government initiatives in the region such as the salinity action plan, the State wetlands policy and regional integrated planning activities.
"It will provide a single point of contact for the community on all water-related matters," Dr Hames said.
"It will be used as a resource centre and as a meeting place for community groups involved in water resource management."
