Opening of area rehabilitated as result of North Coogee Landscape Project

Western Australians have regained a substantial tract of foreshore as a result of the North Coogee Landscape Project.
Today Commerce and Trade Minister Hendy Cowan officially opened the rehabilitated area between South Beach and Robb Road to the public and released an eight-page colour brochure about the project.
"Thirty hectares of degraded and neglected land around Catherine Point and the old Robb Jetty abattoir site have been transformed into an exciting recreation asset," Mr Cowan said.
"This restoration includes unique works of art which celebrate an area rich in social and industrial heritage.
"Artist Tony Jones has refashioned a cattle race into a thought-provoking interactive work called 'Human Race' to mark the area's historic role in Western Australia's meat industry.
"A second art work, 'Clear The Course', by Anne Neil, commemorates the State's first horse race held on the beach in 1833.
"Horses have continued to exercise there over the years.
"Further artworks are planned to recognise the area's Aboriginal heritage and to commemorate the visionary civil engineer C Y O'Connor.
"Damaged dunes are being restored by recontouring and replanting more than 40,000 shrubs and trees.
"Also, new dual-use paths, shelters, barbecues, car parks and road improvements will make the area a significant local recreational resource.
"There has already been a dramatic increase in people walking and cycling through the area."
Cockburn Mayor John Grljusich said he was thrilled the city had been able to negotiate such a wonderful result along the North Coogee coastline.
The North Coogee Landscape Project, managed by Ecoscape Pty Ltd, was jointly undertaken by the WA Government and the City Of Cockburn.
The project is part of the Coogee Master Plan, co-ordinated by the Department of Commerce and Trade. It has two other elements - an industrial estate for the animal, seafood and food processing industries, and a residential development with marina facilities.
