A new centre designed to train course participants to fight any kind of fire was opened today by Labour Relations Minister Cheryl Edwardes.

Officially opening the Industrial Foundation for Accident Prevention (IFAP)'s new Fire Training Centre in Leeming, the Minister said it would be a valuable tool for teaching employees fire safety.

Mrs Edwardes congratulated IFAP on its excellent record in promoting safety and health through education and training programs and consultancy services.

"The Fire Training Centre will offer a unique service to WA industry," she said.

"It offers a choice of courses covering every aspect of fire safety, including leadership and management skills at all levels."

The Minister said the most impressive feature of the fire training centre was the practical training it offered.

"I congratulate IFAP on this very impressive facility and the services it offers," she said.

"I am sure it will make an important contribution to occupational safety and health in WA."

The new Fire Training Centre has been developed to international standards, offering professional expertise and 'hands-on' instruction and training.

Anything from a fire in a chip cooker to a helicopter crash or offshore rig explosion can be re-created with real fire to provide practical experience.

The centre also offers a purpose-built fire house, breathing apparatus course and a chemicals complex.
