New facilities at Mt Hawthorn's Menzies Park reflected the areas' rejuvenation, Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore said.

Mr Moore, who opened the facilities today, said there had been a resurgence of interest in local football clubs. As well, the large number of young children in the area had added impetus to community demands for improved parks and playing fields.

The Minister said the new Menzies Park Pavilion added a further dimension to the reserve, with community and other groups now able to use its meeting, function and kitchen areas.

There was also a fenced children's playground area next to the pavilion.

The pavilion was built at a cost of approximately $180,000, with the State Government contributing one-third of the cost though its WA Alive program (formerly the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund).

Mr Moore said that as well as community groups, the pavilion would be home to the Cardinals Football Club and the University Cricket Club.

The Town of Vincent had made the replacement of the dilapidated changerooms a priority when it started administering the area in 1995.

"The old changerooms, put up when Menzies Park was established by the old City of Perth, were well past their 'use-by' date," the Minister said.

"Now the local community has a real asset and one which I am sure will be of great benefit to everyone."
