Premier Richard Court says the new Subiaco Square is set to become one of Perth's most important and popular civic spaces.
Opening the square today, Mr Court said it was a graphic demonstration of how thoughtful planning, combined with Western Australian know-how, could turn under-utilised industrial land into a magnificent community asset.
Subiaco Square is 4,000sqm of landscaped and paved community space, and links 'downtown' Subiaco with the new residential areas of Subi Centro, the railway station and a new shopping precinct.
"The planners who created the Subiaco Redevelopment Scheme, which underscores the Subi Centro project, always had it in their minds to create a civic place where people could meet, have a coffee, catch a train, shop for the day's groceries or simply relax in the sun," Mr Court said.
"They have achieved that with Subiaco Square."
Subiaco Square is expected to become a bustling centrepiece of life in Subiaco and is surrounded by apartments and retail spaces.
"The wide landscaped pedestrian boulevards and cycle paths, lined with hedges and mature trees, mean access to and from Subiaco Square is as easy on foot as it is by car," Mr Court said.
"This reflects the fact that the entire precinct has been designed to promote walking and cycling as a real alternative to taking the car.
"This square is the latest project in the redevelopment of the area, which has seen former railway reserve and old factories transformed into residential areas, public open space and retail areas."
