A new million-dollar community centre in Rockingham will enhance the well-being of local families and residents by creating a focal point for community interaction, according to Family and Children's Services Minister Rhonda Parker.

Officially opening the new community centre, located at Secret Harbour, Mrs Parker said the facility would play a key role in strengthening community links.

"Community facilities encourage a sense of place and a sense of responsibility among members of the community," she said.

"The centres provide a focus, a new 'heart' for community activities, by bringing families and individuals together which strengthens local ties and encourages community involvement."

Mrs Parker said the project was a joint initiative involving Family and Children's Services which provided $200,000; the City of Rockingham $300,000; $250,000 from the Lotteries Commission and $350,000 from Secret Harbour Estate.

The Minister said the new community centre was part of an integrated plan for Secret Harbour which included a primary school, medical centre, child care centre, church, shopping complex and aged persons' facility.

"Residents attending the community centre will be able to access family support, financial counselling, children's programs and other recreational activities at the facility which include a hall, activity room and offices," she said.

Mrs Parker said the Rockingham office of Family and Children's Services and the City of Rockingham had developed a management process to encourage access and participation by the community to the new centre and to maintain suitable grounds, buildings and equipment.

The State Government was committed to providing services to strengthen family ties and Family and Children's Services had entered into partnerships with local governments to build similiar centres at Merriwa, Wungong, Ballajura South and Ellenbrook.

"It is pleasing that the Government has had such an important role in providing funds and working with the community to create such an excellent facility," the Minister said.
