Mount Pleasant Primary School - built in 1953 - has been upgraded to the standard of Western Australia's newest schools.
Education Minister Colin Barnett today opened the $720,000 additions and alterations to the brick and tile building.
"It is part of the $15 million allocated to upgrade established primary schools in Western Australia during the last three years," Mr Barnett said.
"It is underlines this Government's priorities are to ensure WA education facilities have the same benefits for all students no matter where they live."
The Minister said Mt Pleasant Primary School had been modernised to a level where it boasted equal facilities offered by new schools.
Because the school population has dropped from 700 to 340 in the last few years, a block of six old Bristol classrooms, which were expensive to maintain, was demolished. The area has enlarged the oval playing space for children.
"The old staffroom and a classroom were converted to become an art and craft room, which will enhance the strong art and craft program operating at this school," Mr Barnett said.
A new automated library and room for teachers carrying out duties other than teaching were added. The administration area was extended.
"Students will benefit enormously from these additions which will make the school a more vibrant, attractive community asset," Mr Barnett said.
The new facilities will benefit the Education Department's instrumental music program which teaches cello, violin, viola and trumpet to year five, six and seven students who are musically adept. The school has a string ensemble and regularly performs with the Applecross Senior High School's junior string orchestra.
